In Sonic Adventure (DX), are we supposed to say exactly how many rings we got,
or should the limit be 999?
I submitted some records of 1000+ rings in Sonic's levels, and I don't know if it's okay.

Whatever the records screen says is what you submit.  I have 2710 rings on Casinopolis, but that isn't tracked for obvious reasons, so if you can break 1000 on a level, go ahead and ignore the HUD's imposed cap.

I think I'll change them all to 999.
Here's one problem:

Marth                       1204
sonicam                   999
LinksDarkArrows       999
P1 Pause                  999

See? Other people have submitted records of 999, but there
doesn't seem to be a rule against submitting records of 1000+.
There should be a limit, since some crazy person could leave his system on
for a couple days and completely max out the counter
(which would be either 9999 or 99999. I forgot what the limit was.)
What do you think?

Knowing how the Dreamcast save file works, the limit would be 65535 rings.

Is there a way of generating rings within levels to achieve an arbitrarily high total?  If so, those charts need to be removed for the same reason as Casinopolis.  If not, and if there are 1000 or more rings in the level, submit all that you get as shown on the saved record screen, not what the HUD shows.  Users who submitted 999 rings can go back and check what's really saved, and submit that ring count instead.

I thought the TSC cap for rings was 999 (3 digits) so I never thought exceeding 1000 Rings was possible, but if it allowed, will do, I'll check all my records for 1000+ Rings.

The records show more than 999 rings? I never knew that. Wicked.

to Rolken: The level select screen shows more than 1000 rings,
but the ring counter only shows 999 until the level is completed.

to sonicam: I changed my records to 999.
No one else had anything higher, so I made mine match.
There's no limit, though. I thought it would automatically reduce my records to 999.
There doesn't seem to be a limit, but one should be set.
Like I said, someone could grab first place on a bunch of charts, just by wasting time.

to SadisticMystic: Yes, there is a way.
Twinkle Park and Lost World have buttons that make rings appear,
but there's a special trick to getting hundreds of rings in Speed Highway.
The 999 limit should be okay. Over 800 rings can be collected in Sonic's Final Egg,
but I don't think it's possible to reach 999 in any level without an endless supply of rings.
Maybe Twinkle Park and Lost World should be removed, but
there probably won't be much of a problem with Speed Highway.
(unless lots of people discover the trick)

Does the Speed Highway ring source have to do with going back and forth between bells to make the game forget you've already used up the bells for rings?

It would be better to, rather than imposing a limit on rings, to remove the charts for levels which can provide arbitrarily large numbers of rings. Because, if you can get more than 999 rings, without using a silly method in a silly level, you deserve that first place.

Sort of. There's no reason to try to hide the secret now.
I went to the bell at the capsule, took the rings, went down the street to the spring,
jumped up onto the ledge, rolled through the tunnel, and jumped into the fountain.
It took me about 29 minutes, including the earlier parts of the level.
I first found out about the trick in Speed Highway 1.
I was wondering if the rings would reappear if the bell went past the draw limit.

CosmicFalcon, I don't think 999 rings can be collected in any other levels,
but it might still be a good idea to remove the charts.

Why did everyone submit records of 999, if there's no limit?

They submitted 999 because that's what was displayed at the top of the screen, and for some reason they follow the HUD instead of level complete or level select screens.  There is no rule saying rings are limited to 999, except that 999 has traditionally been the ring limit in every game except this one.  I remember from a glance at a player's guide that theoretically, with enough 40s from random ring boxes, Final Egg can potentially give over 1000, so if you get that then by all means submit the full amount.

Those three levels, though, with neverending supplies of rings, no longer need to be tracked.  They have officially been purged from the record.

Oh my gawd; the ring record for Final Egg is 802? I never participated in ring scores and mine is 911, done in 4 minutes and a half while normally collecting rings for Chao stuff, ahah. *Submits*

Too bad I skipped tons. ;(

I got 802 on my first try.
The record on my memory card is higher,
but I wanted to make sure I didn't submit my brother's score.
(He likes to collect rings in Final Egg, and he's used my file a bit.)
I collected almost every ring that could be collected,
but I got a lot of 1s and 5s out of the stupid random ring boxes.
